Construction of underground power station of Three Gorges project to start soon

China's environmental protection authorities recently approved the construction plan for an underground power station at the Three Gorges Project, setting the stage for the start of the project.

The underground power station, located in a tunnel in Baiyanjian Mountain on the right bank of the Three Gorges dam, will have six 700,000-kilowatt hydroelectric generating sets. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2009 and total investment will exceed six billion yuan.

Earlier this year, Pan Yue, vice director of China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), said in Beijing that it had ordered China Three Gorges Project Corporation, the project developer, to suspend construction of the underground power station, citing violations of China's environmental protection policies.

Following the suspension, China Three Gorges Project Corporation presented an environmental impact report on the underground power station to SEPA, which eventually gave its green light to the project.
